        Grendel is a novel by John Gardner. It is a retelling of part of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf from the perspective of the antagonist,Grendel.

        An Old English epic poem.It is possibly the oldest surviving long poem in Old English and is commonly cited as one of the most important works of Old English Literature. It was written in England some time between the 8th and the early 11th century. It is considered an epic poem in that the main character is a hero who travels great distances to prove his strength at impossible odds against supernatural demons and beasts. The poem also begins in medias res.
